Multiple Intelligences – Educational Success

By Mary Bogin

Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences has been grasped by the education community as a wonderful and meaningful way to acknowledge, “We are not all the same, we do not all have the same kind of minds, and education works most effectively for most individuals if… human differences are taken seriously.” (Gardner, 1995)

Today’s education is riddled with funding issues, dropped music and art classes for economic purposes, and problems with lower test scores. Why aren’t new teachers using Howard Gardner’s “Multiple Intelligences” as a tool to reach as many students as possible?

The Multiple Intelligences are: Auditory, Kinesthetic, Visual/Spatial, Intraspective, Interspective, Logical/Mathematical and Linguistic. Gardner suggested three more intelligences-Naturalist- Natural Environment, Spiritual/Existential- Religion /Philosophical, Moral- Ethics, Humanity, Value of Life.

These last three “intelligences” are more difficult to assess, but have been recognized in people who have improved the quality of life for others.

Human differences, our uniqueness, offer valuable contributions to society. There is creativity in everyone. Studies have found that after the rigors of raising a family, or after retirement, latent talents have been discovered, and these talents were present throughout life, but not encouraged.

It is up to parents and teachers to provide intelligent environments. Many were educated with teachers and parents who did not encourage cultural diversity, and did not say they could draw a purple tree, or sing an off- beat song. They did not ignite their imaginations, and give them quiet time to process the world’s wonder and its’ opportunities. No, multiple intelligences was not stressed in the teacher education classes, or spoken in the Pediatrician’s office. School systems, so caught up in fiduciary problems, don’t even think about getting to the root of education, which is really teaching, tailored toward the child. The IEP’s (Individual Educational Plan) rarely include assessing the “talents” of the child and then incorporating that learning style into his curriculum.

To teach using the Multiple Intelligences, students should be sitting at tables of six. If there are desks, they may be arranged in a group of six. The chairs or desks, should have space underneath for book storage. Each table or group is a team. The room is like a corporation “brainstorming” room. The teacher chooses the captain (facilitator), recorder, materials leader, for each group and the jobs will rotate around the group.

The responsibilities of the captain will be to keep the table’s students on task, and will be in charge of reporting the results of the final project. Another student will record who is doing what task for the project. This helps the teacher grade an individual student on the project. Each table will become a “team,” and create a team name. The teacher guides the class through the steps of the lesson, and the material’s student at each table will be the only one getting up for the supplies needed for the lesson. Each student’s talents will be used within the group.

Establishing stations- A student who is strong musically, and weak numerically, should be taught numerical and logical skills through music, and not by numbers alone. Math stations should provide headphones with songs including math formulas, etc. There should be an art station, writing, listening, organizing station (housing materials), and any other to encourage learning.

Finally, education using the multiple intelligences will be addressing apprenticeships, so a student will get a chance to explore a trade or profession that works within his or her intelligences. This is not to track a person into a trade, but the right apprenticeship will feel natural, and most likely bring the student into a field that will bring many years of joy since it was tailored toward his or her skills and abilities.

Education is in trouble, and there are many reasons, but using the Multiple Intelligences is one tool to bring us to the forefront of global learning.

Is Education and Success Linked?

By Mark W. Medley

There is no doubt that a good, quality early education forms one of the basis of becoming successful in society. However beyond a school education, this has been questioned by many successful people, who have either dropped out of College or built up successful businesses at an early age.

Some of our most successful people, do not have a University degree, notably Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs. Others like the founder of Virgin, Richard Branson, dropped out of College, and became one of the UK’s most successful businessmen. Facebook users may be aware that the business founder, Mark Zuckerberg, dropped out of Harvard and focused on creating one of today’s most successful global on-line social networking sites.

A higher education in today’s World is linked to getting a good job, but at a cost as in most Countries, we need to pay for that education, and borrow to continue it. In some cases students leave college with huge debts, which need to be repaid. And the cost of studying is rising, even in a recession.

Some critics citing the link between education and success, cite the fact that not everyone is suited to a college education. And with the fact that in the future, a high percentage of new graduates may never work in the field they studied in. They may end up in debt, and actually face a more uncertain future, then before they entered university.

In Asia, where education is seen as a sign of success, some wealthy entrepreneurs, study for a degree after they become a financial success. But they want their children to become college graduates, and are willing to pay for a traditional university education overseas- When the cost could provide a business for their children, and a home.

This reverse thinking on Education, were at first you become successful then study could become a new trend in education outside Asia. Whilst some college graduates may look down on people like Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg- known as “the kid who made 60 million in 18 months.” But someone like Kevin Rose, could now easily afford to sit back and study for a degree, and hire hundreds of these graduates as his employees.

Some experts also cite the need for innovative, skilled workers especially in new Green tech industries. Industries that should always provide well paid, and stable employment opportunities for many people now returning back to college- an option that could be much better than an actual traditional university education.

We will always need innovative, skilled technicians, inventors and designers who “think out the box.” and can earn much more than a degree holder. These skills cannot always be learnt at a traditional university, but are as equally valuable to society.

Before you decide on whether a traditional college education is for you, there are options. Success and education may not always be linked- as a university degree may not even guarantee you a job in the area you studied in the future.

Other options do include online degrees, and training courses linked to the careers of the future. Where you can continue earning, and still study without incurring the growing debts many college graduates face. Debts that may compromise future career decisions- once a traditional university education has been completed.

Taking the step of entering a traditional college could be the right step for you, but first look at your options and your own personal skills. Perhaps you could discover other pathways to success, or compromise through developing your skills through work, whilst studying for an on-line degree.

Confused, fearful or simply looking for a better future? Learn how to survive and thrive in an uncertain economy. [https://www.createspace.com/3386170/?p=417]build a future for you and your family

The Key To Success Is Education

By Matt Goslee

As a young child my parents have always instilled it into me that I needed to finish high school and then go on to college. Which I did finish high school in 1994 form the best high school in Columbia, South Carolina. I then went off to college to find my calling. While in school I changed colleges a few times going form The Citadel to Clemson University and a few other smaller community schools as well. My parents were very helpful in my education and wanted me to use what I had learned out in the real world. I first started out with a degree in Animal Science and an almost completed degree in Microbiology with a minor in Agricultural Business all from Clemson University. I left before graduating with one course left and then moved to North Carolina to finish and to take a farming job. I was not happy working on this particular farm and went back to school to finish my degrees from Clemson University. While finishing up this degree I started to realize that I wanted to teach and went back to school for a Secondary Biological Education degree at Fayetteville State University.

I finally used my degree in my work taking a teaching position at a nearby high school in Sumter, South Carolina. I taught here for three years and during this time I had obtained yet another degree this time a Master’s in Technology and Education from Lesley University. My Master’s required reflections of what I had done and where I was going along with a development of a philosophy of my teaching style. When doing these exercises that were required for each class I started to understand where my parents were coming from. The key to success is education and they knew that without a good education the opportunities for a good job would be slim to none. Without a good education they knew that a blue collar job would be the only thing I would ever achieve and they wanted better than that for me.

If you told me during high school that I would still be in school when I was thirty years old and only have two years off I would have laughed at you so hard that I could have died. When going to college and taking part time jobs I started to see that the more education that I had the better my job became. That is not to say that if could obtain five or six more degrees then I would be a CEO of a multibillion dollar company. What I am saying is that with the right education one could obtain the job that they desire in life.

The more education I received the broader my mind was able to grasps concepts which resulted in quicker understanding of new concepts. The understanding of new concepts is very important in running not just a home-based business, but any business. All the time I am bombarded with new concepts to understand in a moments notice to make an informed decision about that I may only understand a part of until later when I can go back and add time to research the subject.

The more education I could obtain on a certain subjects allowed me to make better informed decisions that would result in increased income or better equipment. College showed me how to do research that allows me to take a topic that I have no idea of what it is and how it works to a working knowledge then finally to mastery of the subject matter. At the stage of mastery of the subject matter only then can I speak intellectually on the subject to make a decision for or against a business opportunity. Without this education poor decisions can be made which in turn can cause a spiraling trend and ultimately end in the folding of my business.

Third, keeping an open mind all through my education for the person that was trying to impart their knowledge one to me allowed me to get where I am today. I run a very successful MLM business that I am adding 20 to 30 people a week into my business and teaching other to do the same.
